Botox® & Filler Treaments

Botox® is a popular treatment which treats wrinkles and lines that are caused by smiling, laughing and frowning. Botox is used to minimise muscle movement that causes lines, furrows and wrinkles. Botox used to be used to freeze the face but it’s now used to subtly to remove lines and wrinkles and give a more relaxed, youthful appearance.

The pain from the treatment is minimal and the results are easy to see after a few days.

The treatment usually lasts three to four months. As well as being used on its own, botox can also be used with other skin rejuvenating treatments. Please ask in the clinic for advice. Botox can also be used to treat excessive sweating.

How does Botox® work?

The facial muscles which are connected to the expression lines are relaxed so they cannot contract. The botulinum toxin blocks the impulses from the nerve endings to the small facial muscles. The treatment will leave the skin feeling soft and smooth and the facial muscles which are not treated will function normally.

Is Botox® treatment safe?

Botulinum toxin is safe and has been used for a number of years. Botox is used to treat lines and wrinkles but it has also been used to treat neurological and ophthalmological conditions. It has been used to tens of thousands of people have used botox to treat a number of conditions. It is a very popular treatment to have for anti-ageing.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rare however a small number of people might have some bruising where the injection took place. This is only temporary and can easily be covered up with makeup. Others may experience a mild headache. Drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid has been stated but this is only temporary and also very rare.

What does the treatment feel like?

Small needles are used to inject the Botox and the treatment has minimal pain. After the treatment there might be a small amount of swelling that will disappear within 24-48 hours.

Which areas can be treated?

The areas that are most commonly treated are; the ‘frown ‘ line between the wrinkles, the wrinkles around the eyes, ‘crow’s feet’ , horizontal forehead lines, the ‘sad’ lines on the corners of the mouth and it also often used to decrease the lipstick bleed line. The Botox is a muscle relaxing injection that will cause temporary weakening of the muscle it is used on and this then reduces the wrinkles above the muscle.

Who carries out the treatment?

Wrinkles begin to appear on the face when collagen and elastin fibres underneath the skin start to wear away. This is the normal and natural process of ageing but certain factors can speed up the ageing process.

For example; smoking, sun damage and poor nutrition. The ageing process usually starts around the age of about 25.

There are a wide range of injectable products that can be used to help create a more youthful appearance. These products could; pump out mouth to nose lines, plump out deeper wrinkles and also enhance lips which help give a more youthful appearance. The fillers which are used most often are hyaluronic based which contain no animal products.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the skin and this means that the body’s own hyaluronic acid works with it to create volume. The product contains no animal products and has not been tested on animals. This means it is suitable to use on people who are concerned it may have come from an animal source.

What areas can be treated?

The area’s that is most commonly treated is the nose to mouth line which is either around the mouth or for shaping the chin and cheeks. Lips enhancement is also becoming increasingly popular.

How is the treatment carried out?

The product is injected into the dermis, under the skin. A very fine needle is used in this process. The product then replenishes the natural volume of the skin. It also helps fight the skins of ageing by smoothing out lines and wrinkles. It can be used for a number of treatments such as to remove the nose to mouth line, to shape the cheeks and chin, to fill lip lines or to enhance the lips.

What does the treatment feel like?

There is minimal discomfort with this treatment and usually there is no anaesthesia. Some products do however contain a local anaesthetic to help reduce the discomfort.
